This is the third piece in our “Using Contests to Engage your Attendees on Social Media” series. Today the focus is on how to use contests on Instagram to boost your attendee engagement.
The simplest form of a contest on Instagram is to ask people to like a particular photo that you post. The winner will then be drawn randomly. A similar contest would be to ask people to follow you on Instagram to be entered to win. This will increase your exposure and your number of followers, but it will not get you personal information like email addresses.
To gather more information from your entrants then you will need to run a contest that requires readers to submit photos to be entered. You will want to set-up a web form or use the Facebook app for Instagram contests as your entry form that requires an email address (or other personal information) when the photo is submitted. This information can then be used to learn about potential attendees and send targeted messages to them.
As with all social media contests you will want to give some thought to the prize you will offer. If you want to attract a wide range of entrants then consider a prize such as the latest “must-have” gadget (e.g. iPad or similar). If you want to attract people who would genuinely be interested in your brand or event then you may select a product or service that is specific to your industry.
Finally, be sure to clearly state the rules of your contest including how to enter, what information is required, what hash tag should be used, when the contest ends, and how the winner will be announced.
